Good afternoon world,
Trust that you are all enjoying a magnificent day....here in Cape Town it is absolutely glorious. Clear skies, sunny weather, I dont smell any braaiing (barbequeing) meat wafting in on the breeze but all is good in here where Autumn is finally revealing her cool self. The mercury has dropped somewhat ; I have been hauling out the winter woolies and laundering them to get them all fresh and clean and have also dusted off my slow cooker and made a meal or two in my fabulous new flame coloured cocotte :o) Sounds fancy hey? I love Le Creuset...what can I say??

Talking of which....have you guys seen the fantastic new color that is being released in SA at the end of this month? I kid you not.....I am green with envy and have got to start spending less on food so that I can procure one of the wonderful looking pots in the new CASSIS range

Greetings everyone, I am just popping in with the news that following on from the SA Food Bloggers Conference last month Jane-Anne Hobbs has formed the South African Food Bloggers Network on facebook - a group for like minded people to share ideas and inspiration, showcase your blog posts and support your fellow bloggers. Access to this group is by invitation only.

This is an open invitation to you to join this group. If you fit the following criteria then you qualify to apply to belong to the group:

1. You need to be a South African

2. You may be living anywhere in the world not necessarily in South Africa. So come on you ex-pat foodies out there...now is your chance!!

3. You need to write, or co-write, a blog about food, wine or food/wine related articles.

If you are already on facebook just pop over to this page and request to join. Please give the url of your blog as well when you request to join.

I do the admin and will do the necessary to get you admitted to the group

Hmmmm, Im just sitting here wondering if you can join the group if you do not have a personal facebook page. If you try, and you can't apply you might want to consider joining facebook so that you can network your blog :o). SAFBC PART 2

Contrary to what Douglas (a cheeky reader on my Kitchen Diary blog) thinks I am not resting or relaxing :o) No, no, I've actually been very busy in fact - cleaning up after the conference. People to see, people to thank (sponsors and guests), I have almost 1,300 emails to wade through......places to go! My grandson had his fungym show at school on Tuesday evening, on Wednesday I had to babysit (twice - 2 hours in the afternoon and then again in the evening for parent teacher meetings) Thursday it was Taste of Cape Town seeing as we had received 2 entry tickets each in each goodie bag - WOW! Amazing....that will be a post on its own! Suffice to say it was a wonderful experience and I really enjoyed it. Ran into a lot of new friends made at the food bloggers conference so had quite a social scene going as well.

Friday night it was cocktails in Mouille Point with Jeanne from Cooksister and a few other bloggers, Nina from My Easy Cooking, Rosemary from Homemade Heaven, Nicola from Wotsforlunch, Doula Mel from Bosom Buddies & myself. We had the added excitement of watching the Queen Mary 2 sail out of Table Bay Harbour and into the sunset.

The social life has to end soon.But not quite yet. Tomorrow evening I am donning my apron and heading off to Silwood Kitchen to cook with Le Creuset - those wonderful casserole people who also sponsored the conference. What a privilege, I am hugely thrilled by it.

I was also invited to participate in a day with Simonsberg Cheese tomorrow out at a wine farm in Durbanville Hills but unfortunately it is Easter holidays so it means that this week I am the grandmother of two little rascals who are needing taking care of while Mommy is at work!! Aaaarrrgh. I hope everyone entered the competition they are running over on 24.com as those Simonsberg events are just fabulous. I went to one last year and it was fantastic. We were treated to a delicious luncheon with chef and author Marlene van der Westhuizen at her cooking school in Green Point. We had a fab cheese tasting with the cheesemaker from Simonsberg and it was interesting. Their cheeses are absolutely wonderful!! And they sponsored the Food Bloggers Conference too so it would've been grand to get there and thank the right people in person.

I have finally completed editing the photographs from the first SA Food Bloggers Conference and have put them onto my personal facebook profile if anyone would like to take a look. If you are not on facebook (or not a friend) let me know and I can try and send you a link so that you can see them. But a lesson learned at the SAFBC was that you should link your blog to facebook and twitter if you want to get readership :o)

SA FOOD BLOGGERS CONFERENCE PART 1

Well, the sun rose and set on Sunday and the first ever SA Food Bloggers Conference has received the proverbial nod and been claimed as a resounding success by those in the know (aka those who were there!). PHEW!!! What a relief! A lot of hours of work went into the co-ordinating and I have a great new respect for those who do this on a regular basis! After neglecting my family, my blog and myself I have come out the other side and am so thrilled with the outcome. It was a new challenge to me and I was determined that it would be successful. Those who know me well know that I am very much a behind the scenes kind of girl. I will work very hard in the back ground, I like taking the photos and not posing for them. I will listen to others speak but I prefer not to speak (publically I mean!). The anonymity of blogging has been very appealing to me in the past so this was a massive step out of my comfort zone. But that is what being on the right side of 50 and the right side of 60 does for one I guess!! I really have been enjoying the newfound confidence since I turned 50 way back when. I said then that it was my very best year but I think it will be surpassed by 2010....What an amazing experience! I am thrilled at how it all turned out and I think everyone there thoroughly enjoyed their day. I personally have come away from the first SA Food Bloggers Conference with a lot more knowledge and savvy on blogging and social networking and I will be sharing some of what we learned with you all.

Today I am just giving you two small bites from our grand day........

IT'S ALMOST SUNDAY!!

Good afternoon, it is a glorious day in Cape Town. I need to see a sunset but will have to wait until after the conference. There is too much to do right now.

Life is chaotic but I see light at the end of the tunnel and it is definitely the lights at the Giggling Gourmet Cooks Playground......things are on track, the goodie bags are being stuffed as I write this. Bring shopping bags to re-inforce your goodie bags guys!! They are FULL to brimming with delightful goodies............and there is still more waiting at the venue.....I should have gone with bigger bags!!

Good morning world, it's a bright sunny day in Cape Town but the south easter is blowing and there is a decided Autumnal nip in the air. It is quite delicious to feel the first hair raising prickles on your skin after the mind-blowing heat of the past couple of weeks that we have experienced. Well, the holiday and wedding are behind us and we are back home with shoulders to the wheel. Had a wonderful time with family and friends and even managed to get a bit of work done via my mobile phone and the wonders of technology. I was about to write good evening everyone until I looked at the time in the corner on my screen and realized with a shock that it is already tomorrow and I should actually be saysing Good morning everyone!! I have so much work still to do before I can go away on Monday on holiday for the week that I am sitting here. My mind is soactive and crammed with stuff anyway that I would not be able to sleep so what better way to spend the time than to sit here blogging? Greetings from the Mother City. It is the most amazing day again here. HOT but beautiful. These photographs were taken from Boyes Drive looking across False Bay on Sunday evening during the rising of the full moon. It was such a magnificent evening and the view was breathtaking. It was difficult to choose between the sunset over the Atlantic or the moon rise over the Indian Ocean. How wonderful to have choices like that!! As the sun was setting the moon started appearing and hung over the mountain like a huge orange balloon for a moment or two before gracefully continuing to rise into the pink, purple and orange sky.

Nobody ever told me that my little baby was going to grow into a big monster with horns....I tell you people I am stressed out of my cotton socks...But hang on a minute. CAPE TOWN FOOD BLOGGERS CONFERENCE

Time waits for no blogger. There are only 3 1/2 weeks left before the most exciting blogging event to hit the shores of South Africa. I cannot believe that it is so close now...........and I still have soooo much to do!! Stress, nerves, knotted neck and shoulders and rescue remedy are my constant companions....this has to be the biggest challenge in my life since...well, since sliced bread :o)

HEAVENLY APPLE PIE

This morning passed in a very pleasant way. I took some time off from conference convening and had a little tea for some "old" friends. A wonderful excuse to make my heavenly apple pie. Two of the couples present are ex-pats visiting from Los Angeles and Texas so it was a wonderful reunion. This is an old family recipe that I have sadly neglected in the last few years but yesterday when I was feeling very tired with no desire to bake it suddenly came to mind at the last minute as I was about to go and see what I could buy for tea!!!! (HORRORS!!!) I think everything inside of my baker's heart rebelled against that idea so late last night found me in the kitchen whipping up my heavenly apple pie. The aromas that accompanied me to bed after midnight were enticing to say the least. I served it simply on a plate with a dollop of whipped cream. It was so delicious I thought I would share it with you. I am, after all, a food blogger and that's what food bloggers do :o)

HEAVENLY APPLE PIE

125ml Granulated Sugar

60g Butter - at room temperature

Vanilla Bean Seeds - just a knife tip

3 Jumbo sized Eggs

30ml Milk

250ml All purpose or Cake Flour

5ml Baking Powder

1ml Salt

1ml Ground Cinnamon

1 Can Pie Apples

For the sauce:

1 Can Evaporated Milk

60g Butter - at room temperature

250ml Granulated Sugar

Knife tip of vanilla bean seeds

Preheat the oven to 180deg Celcius

Grease a deep pie dish well with butter

Beat the sugar, butter & vanilla well until light

Beat the eggs until very pale and thick

Mix the eggs into the batter

Sift the dry ingredients together then fold into the batter

Add the milk and mix through

Turn the mixture out into the greased pie plate and level

Place the apples on top of the cake mixture

Bake for about 30 minutes until lightly browned on top and a skewer inserted comes out clean

Ten minutes before the cake comes out the oven make the sauce as follows:

Boil together the ingredients in a saucepan over low heat for 5 minutes - stirring all the time

and watching that it does not boil over or burn

Once the pie comes out the oven prick it all over with a fork or skewer then pour over the boiling sauce

a bit at a time until it is all absorbed by the cake

Serve at room temperature with whipped cream, ice cream or custard!

CTFBC NEWS & UPDATE

Its another beautiful day in Cape Town today - well, it is from where I am looking at it here on the southside of the mountain. You never can tell with this awesome city. You can drive around the peninsula and experience all four seasons in one day :o) On Saturday evening the hubs and I went to drink in one of the spectacular sunsets that we experience here and it was a really good one, especially in light of the fact that the next day was Valentines Day. Take a look for yourself and you will know what I mean.....

The organizing and co-ordinating of the conference is going very well. It is my intention that we bring those who are attending this exciting event a slick, polished and highly entertaining and educational day.

Exciting news is that Sam Wilson Editor in Chief of Women24, Food24 and Parent24 has agreed to speak on one of the topics and Jane-Anne Hobbs, better known as Juno, professional book editor, sub-editor and writer of 20 years experience and author of the fabulous blog Scrumptious SA is also going to present a topic that she is very passionate about.

AHOY FOOD BLOGGERS

Good day readers, it is a breathtaking hot summer's day here today, not conducive to standing in the kitchen ;o)
We are calling all food bloggers and those wannabe foodies from across the globe. We know there are a lot of you……

We have been working frenziedly behind the scenes to plan the first South African Food Bloggers Conference…….not a MOB (meeting of Bloggers) but an actual conference (open to all food blogging platforms) that will include speakers and lunch etc. How exciting is that???? America has her Blogher Conferences and the UK in November had their first London Food Bloggers Conference. Both were very successful and informative events and it is this that has inspired me so much. Why should we be left out down here at the tip of Africa??The first seed was planted in my brain when I met up with Nina from My Easy Cooking and Taz from Cocoa for breakfast late last year while Taz was on holiday in the Mother City. We chatted about how entertaining and educational it must be to have one of these conferences and that it would never happen here. Once home I was thinking again about it and the seed began to germinate and a crazy little voice told me "There is no reason why South Africa should NOT have one. You do it"!!! Moi? Nooooooo!!! I was dragged kicking and screaming to the first little sticking a feeler out there chat with a potential speaker. And almost 4 months down the line here we are.....almost ready for the day!! Since posting the survey on my blog Kitchen Diary on the 1st February the interest generated has proven to be phenomenal, proving that there is a great need for this type of convention all over the world.

So the beautiful Mother city, Cape Town, is obviously the choice of venue for the first SA Food Bloggers Conference, not least for the fact that everyone currently involved in the organizing lives in and around the Cape peninsula (well excepting for one over the pond on mud island). We are a friendly lot and Cape Town boasts wonderful tourist attractions and we look forward to welcoming all our friends, exposing you to the fantastic fresh produce & wines coming out of our region and the overall beauty that is Cape Town.

Welcome to the official website of the Cape Town Food Bloggers Conference 2010. I am so thrilled and excited to be a part of this awesome venture and I can tell you that the planning/organizing is on track and going well. I am currently looking for sponsorship for the conference and if you have any contacts in the retail world please do let me know and I will follow up.

Like many in South Africa, we have a sincere need to meet up with more than one or two of our cyber friends. The aim of this conference has not been to generate funds for some or other cause or charity but to invest as much as possible into growing the awareness and potential in the thousands of food bloggers and Millions (potentially) of bloggers who are discussing relevant issues, topics, sports, arts not to mention the fact that many are linked to fund generating opportunities around the world.

We therefore ask that you paste one of the logo's in your posts, in your button/badge areas, do a post about the whole event........whatever it is going to take to get the message across to mainstream product managers, supermarkets etc.........that as a group we foodie bloggers can spend up to double what the average family spends to ensure that our blogs are updated, relevant and world class.
